'Dads Defeat Power, 7-5, in Rain-Shortened Game

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads cranked out seven runs on 10 hits to defeat the West Virginia Power, 7-5, in 5.5 complete innings, before 1,414 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on a rainy Tuesday night. After a 40 minute rain delay in the middle of the sixth, the umpires called the game due to inclement weat her.

With the win, the 'Dads secured the series against West Virginia with one game remaining Wednesday night, and remain one game behind the Lakewood BlueClaws for 1st in the Northern Division with five games remaining in the half.

West Virginia (29-36) got on the board in the first against Crawdads All-Star starter RHP Matt Thompson (5-4, 3.99 ERA). C Ramon Cabrera lined a two-out double to right, scoring 2B Jarek Cunningham from second and RF David Rubinstein from first, to put the Power in front early, 2-0.

The Crawdads (38-27) responded with four runs in the second to take the lead and the momentum. After DH Cristian Santana and LF Ed Koncel each singled to put runners at first and third, 1B Mike Ortiz followed with a single to left to plate Santana for the first run of the inning. After 2B Edwin Garcia was struck out by Power starter LHP Jhonathan Ramos (0-1, 6.55 ERA), SS Leury Garcia launched a three-run homer to center to hand the 'Dads a 4-2 lead.

The Power cut the Hickory lead to one in the third on an RBI single by DH Jose Hernandez, scoring David Rubinstein from second, making it 4-3. However, the Crawdads answered back with three runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-3. With the bases loaded and one out, West Virginia reliever RHP Maurice Bankston uncorked a wild pitch allowing all three runners to advance with Ortiz scoring from third. All-Star CF Miguel Velazquez then smacked a single to center, bringing in Leury Garcia and RF Jared Prince from second and third, putting Hickory ahead by four.

The Power added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, before the rain began to fell and the game entered a delay. After 40 minutes, the umpires called the game and the Crawdads registered the 7-5 victory.

Thompson allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out nine in five innings to pick up the win for the Crawdads. Ramos surrendered four runs on seven hits while fanning one through three innings to get saddled with the loss for the Power in his first start of the season.

Fans can also participate in the season-long Wii Wednesday Home Run Derby with the winner at the end of the season receiving a FREE Nintendo Wii. The 'Dads are also holding a Salute to Kevin Costner with all Kevins receiving FREE tickets to the game.
