Jackals Use Early Lead To Hang Defeat On Boulders

The New Jersey Jackals scored three times in the first inning and held on to defeat the visiting New York Boulders, 6-3, on Tuesday at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, NJ.
New York closed to within a run at 4-3 in the sixth inning, but the Jackals held the Boulders scoreless the rest of the way thanks to relievers Reece Karalus, Jason Zgardowski and Dylan Brammer.
The Jackals got an RBI single from Russ Olive and a two-run double against Boulders' starter Ben Strahm in the bottom of the first inning to grab a quick 3-0 lead.
The teams traded runs in the second inning - the Boulders getting one back on an RBI single by Brandon Bingle, while the Jackals answered with a run-scoring single from Todd Isaccs that scored Demterius Moorer, who had tripled, as New Jersey maintained their three-run lead at 4-1.
It stayed that way until the top of the sixth. Zach Penprase led off for New York with a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Jackals' starter Angelo Baez and then scored on Bingel's third hit of the night, a double. Gian Martellini followed with a single that plated Bingel and cut the Boulders' deficit to 4-3.
Reece Karalus then relieved Baez, who had danced around trouble in his five-plus innings, allowing 11 hits and walking two. The Boulders finished the night with a dozen hits.
A Milton Smith, Jr. single and Jack Sundberg walk loaded the bases for New York with no one out. However, Karalus escaped without allowing another run by retiring Zach Kirtley on a pop up and striking out Tucker Nathans and Kevonte Mitchell.
The Jackals responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth against Boulders' reliever Ryan Munoz, who had kept New Jersey at bay after coming on in the second inning. Justin Wylie opened the frame with a single and T.J. Ward reached on a two-base error by New York third baseman Tucker Nathans. A wild pitch scored Wylie, while a sacrifice fly by Isaacs sent Ward home as the Jackals increased their lead to 6-3.
Those runs were the only blemish over six innings of one-hit relief for Munoz, who struck out seven in his stint on the mound.
Baez got the win for the Jackals, while Strahm took the loss for New York.
