Elmira Jackals News Release

Despite a season-high 51 shots on goal and three power-play goals for the second straight game by the Elmira Jackals at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon, the Jackals fell to the Trenton Devils 7-5, their first regulation loss in four weeks. The crowd of 3,986 was the Jackals' league-leading 11th sellout of the season.

The Devils built a 3-0 lead in the first 2:53 of the first period. The first goal was scored by Tony Zancanaro just 49 seconds in, when he knocked in a loose puck off his initial shot glove side past goaltender Julien Ellis to make it 1-0. Carter Lee garnered his first professional goal, knocking in a rebound from a Dan Eves shot at 1:27, and Dan Charleston scored his third goal of the season at 2:53, sending in a puck in front from Jeremy Akeson.

The Jackals wasted no time battling back, however. Wes Cunningham's shot from the right point was deflected by a Devil and went past goaltender Dave Caruso for their first tally of the contest at 12:10 of the first period. Chris Korchinski knocked in a rebound off a Cunningham shot at 12:10 to make it 3-2, and Tyler Donati's one-timer made its way past Caruso at 18:49 to even the score with the Jackals' second power-play goal.

In the second period, though, the Devils once again pulled away. Jeff Prough scored on the power play at 1:44, beating Ellis stick side with a shot from the left circle to make it 4-3. Charleston scored his second of two goals on the afternoon at 8:54, as the rookie crashed in on Ellis and forced the puck over the goal line to give the Devils a two-goal lead.

That lead became three goals when Brett Wilson tapped in a pass backdoor from Matt Vokes at 7:38 of the final period.

The Jackals were not done, though, scoring two goals in the third period to pull to within one. Brennan Turner's wrist shot from the high slot at 9:18 made it 6-4, and R.J. Anderson converted on the power play to make it a one-goal game at 13:13 of the third.

After a Jackals power play was killed off by the Devils with four minutes left, Jack Combs scored on a Devils power play at 17:57 with a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Ellis to make it 7-5 and finish the scoring.

With the loss, the Jackals ten-game regulation unbeaten streak came to an end, as did their five-game winning streak and they fell to 27-18-3-2. The Devils improved to 19-23-4-5 with the victory.

Ellis made 20 saves on 27 shots, falling to 13-8-1-0 this season, while Caruso's record increased to 10-14-1-1.
