Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night contest the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Alaska Aces met in the second game of a three-game series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Leland Irving between the pipes, while the Aces countered with Scott Reid.

An injury riddled Salmon Kings team skated into the game with only 13 skaters at their disposal, but the home team struck first at the 1:57 mark of the first period. Chad Painchaud scored when he connected on a cross-crease one-timer set up by Randall Gelech. The goal was Painchaud's 21st of the campaign. Alaska replied just over two minutes later. Brock McBride netted his fifth of the year when he put a rebound past Irving. The Salmon Kings retook the lead at 5:33 of the period while on the penalty kill. Wes Goldie was behind the net when he passed the puck to Adam Taylor who blasted a shot over the Aces goaltender. The goal was Taylor's eighth of the season. The teams went into the intermission with the Salmon Kings up 2-1.

The Aces knotted up the game late in the middle frame at the 16:49 mark while shorthanded. Nick Mazzolini put an initial shot on net from the left side of the crease that was saved by the sprawling pad of the Salmon Kings' netminder. On the rebound he was able to put his second shot top-shelf over Irving. The tally was Mazzolini's 18th of the year. The period ended with the game deadlocked at 2-2.

Alaska grabbed their first lead of the game at 8:24 of the third period. Aces captain Scott Burt skated in alone on a breakaway and wristed a shot over the blocker of Irving. The tally gave Burt his eighth goal of the season. The Aces extended their lead a mere 54 seconds later as Judd Blackwater snapped a shot off the cross bar and in for his 20th of the year. Aces forward Eric Boguniecki netted an empty net goal before the Salmon Kings' Mike Hamiton scored in the final minute to round out the scoring. Aces 5 Salmon Kings 3.

Victoria went 0/7=0.0% on the power play, while Alaska was 0/4=0.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Aces 43-37.

The Salmon Kings play the finale of their series against the Aces tomorrow with puck drop at 1:05 after the game. Following the game, the Salmon Kings will present their final "Skate with the Salmon Kings" for 2009-10 season. Skates will be available through the City of Victoria by donation.
