Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs were handed a 5-1 loss by the Cincinnati Cyclones on Sunday evening at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Bryan Marshall started the Chiefs out on the right foot as he continued to torment his former club with a first-period goal. It was his 16th of the season and third in as many games against the team that traded him to Johnstown in mid-November. Assisting on the goal at 8:09 were Matt Kang, who was making his home debut for the Chiefs, and Jim McKenzie. Cincinnati's Barret Ehgoetz, the team's career leader in points, tied the game at 14:27 with a wrist shot from the slot and the assist going to Scott Reynolds. The teams headed into the first intermission tied as John Murray turned in five saves for the Chiefs while Jeremy Smith had four.
Looking to regain control in the second, the Chiefs came storming out of the gates. McKenzie nearly gave them the lead back, but he tipped a Kang pass over the cross bar as he went crashing into Smith. Shortly after the Chiefs missed on their first power play opportunity of the game and left the game even at aces. Ryan Del Monte, in his first game at the War Memorial against the Chiefs, broke the tie for Cincinnati with a power play goal at 17:56, and they took the 2-1 lead into the dressing room.
Too many penalties in the third doomed the Chiefs' comeback attempt, and Cincinnati distanced itself with power play goals. Two 5-on-3 scores 20 seconds apart by Mark Voakes and Reynolds upped the Cyclones' lead to 4-1. Troy Schwab injected energy into the Chiefs' bench and crowd by fighting Patrick Prokop for the second straight night, but Cincinnati withheld the charge and picked up an insurance marker from Voakes
Murray sustained the loss while making 18 saves. The Chiefs were 0-for-2 on the power play and 8-for-11 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to Johnstown Friday, February 19 and 20 against the Trenton Devils at 7:05.
