Wheeling Nailers News Release
Elmira, NY - Michael Teslak made save after save to deny the Wheeling Nailers attack and the Elmira Jackals hung on to beat the Wheeling Nailers 4-1 in the final game of the 3-game showdown series at First Arena in Elmira, NY. The Jackals ended up taking 2 out of 3 games in the series.
Wheeling got off several good chances on Teslak who earned number 1 Star of the Game honors for his 28 save performance allowing just a lone goal to Wheeling's Tommy Goebel early in the 3rd period.
Elmira scored power play goals in the 1st and 2nd periods in building a 2-0 lead. Colton Yellow Horn's 2nd goal of the weekend came in the last minute of the 1st period appearing to snap the wrister off Darling's shoulder and then off the underside of the crossbar after a nice drop from Brendan Connoly gave the Jackals the 1-0 advantage. Brendan connoly lit the lamp for the 6th time this year at the 13:00 mark of the 2nd on a back-door drive to beat Darling and make it 2-0 Elmira at the 2nd break.
Wheeling closed the margin to 2-1 on the power play in the 3rd period when Chris Margott won a face-off clean to Tommy Goebel who was able to quickly slam it past Teslak breaking up the shutout bid. Goebel had a goal in each game of the weekend series and has 14 goals with Wheeling on the year and 24 goals total including his 10 lamplighters with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.
Still trailing 3-1 the Wheeling Nailers had an extra man for the final 3:30 of contest. Elmira took a penalty with 3:30 to go. Elmira took a penalty to allow the Nailers to go on the power play and Wheeling was able to pull netminder Curtis Darling right after the penalty expired with 1:30 remaining. But Elmira was able to block a few shots and clear the zone a couple times and eventually race up ice with a 2-on-1 allowing Pierre-Luc Faubert to score an empty-net goal with 5 seconds remaining to close the series.
Shots on goal were even in the game at 29 apiece. Elmira went 2-for-4 on the power play while Wheeling went 1-for-6.
