South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - After returning home from Gwinnett, the South Carolina Stingrays fought hard against the Mississippi Sea Wolves and gutted out a 3-1 victory in their final home game of the regular season.

"I thought we played well tonight considering the circumstances," says Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We're still looking for playoff positioning so we have a lot to play for in these last few games."

The Rays got the scoring started in the first period with Maxime Lacroix's 33rd goal of the year. After Travis Morin won the face off for the Rays, Lacroix took the shot from the top of the circle getting it behind Ryan Munce. The goal came at 17:47 for Lacroix with the lone assist going to Morin. With the assist, Morin broke the record for most assists in a season by a Stingray, with 61.

Mike Berry tied things up for the Sea Wolves in the second period, with his 14th goal of the season, at 6:52. The Rays would answer back later in the period on a power play goal by Keith Johnson. The goal, Johnson's 21st of the season, was assisted by Morin and Lacroix, after Morin found Johnson from behind the net for a one-timer. With Johnson's goal, the Rays would take a 2-1 lead into the third period of play.

Things remained constant in the third period until Matt Scherer came into the zone on a two on one with Pierre-Luc O'Brien. While the goalie Munce was leaning to prevent the back door play, Scherer took advantage, and fired a shot through the five hole of Munce, making a 3-1 game, the eventual final.

The winning goaltender was James Reimer who stopped 43 of the 44 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Munce who stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-5 on the power play while killing off all six short handed situations they faced.

The Rays will be back in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Charlotte in a preview game of the first round of the playoffs against the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:00, you can tune in to ESPN Radio 910 the Team for all the action starting with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 6:45. And don't forget to swing by Jim and Nick's in North Charleston tomorrow for Monday Night Hockey, the Stingrays Coach's show with Head Coach Jared Bednar and our special guest, Lyon Messier.
