Alaska Aces News Release

PHOENIX - Alaska captain Scott Burt scored twice in the third period to lead the Aces past Phoenix, 3-1, in front of 6,495 Saturday night at US Airways Center.

With the victory, Alaska (44-23-3) reduced its magic number for clinching its fourth West Division title in five years to two. If the Roadrunners beat Idaho Tuesday and Wednesday in Boise, the Aces would clinch; otherwise, Alaska may need three points out of a possible four next weekend at Utah to wrap up the division crown and the accompanying home ice advantage throughout the National Conference playoffs.

The Aces out-shot the 'Runners 10-7 in a scoreless first period but fell behind when Jim Jorgensen whistled a wrist shot from between the circles past J.P. Lamoureux at 3:26 of the second, just as Phoenix finished up a two-man advantage. The score remained 1-0 until early in the third period, when Burt stuffed home a rebound for the equalizer at 1:13. Tomas Kana set up Burt for the eventual game-winning goal off the rush with 9:54 left in regulation. Colin Hemingway polished off a well-executed two-on-one to provide the requisite insurance goal, his team-leading 25th, at 17:34, assisted by Cam Keith.

The Aces have won six of their last eight road games and 10 of their last 12 overall heading into their final two games of the regular season, next Friday and Saturday against the Grizzlies at 5:05 p.m. AT. Both games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. Alaska has beaten Utah six straight times, including a stunning 3-2 win in Anchorage on March 1 when Matt Stefanishion scored a pair of shorthanded goals 45 seconds apart late in the third period to provide the margin of victory.
