Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Stockton, CA - In a Saturday evening matchup, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Stockton Thunder met in the Salmon Kings' final regular season game of the 2008-09 season. Goaltender Julien Ellis started in net for the Salmon Kings, while the Thunder countered with Andrew Perugini.

Victoria kicked off the scoring when Scott Howes fought off Thunder defenseman Darryl Marcoux to step in alone on Perugini. Howes had limited space, but managed to fake to the right and then to the left before pulling the puck back to the right and lifted it in for the 1-0 lead. Patrick Coulombe would make it 2-0 on the power play when he came down the left side and roofed the puck over the blocker shoulder of the Thunder goaltender. Stockton would notch a power play goal at the end of the second period when Ryan Constant would blast home a one-timer from the high slot. Victoria led 2-1 after the first period.

Howes would re-establish the Kings two goal lead when he pulled the puck past a sliding Tyler Kindle and fired it past Perugini for the 3-1 lead. Stockton answered back when Damian Surma came down on a 2-on-1 and fired a shot short side past Ellis. The Thunder would tie the game in the period's final minute when Ryan Huddy snapped a shot over the glove of Ellis. It was a power play goal. The teams were tied 3-3 after 40 minutes.

Huddy would give the Thunder the lead with a blistering snap shot that found the top shelf behind Ellis with 5:32 to go in the game. With time winding down Howes would complete the hat trick when he battled for a puck in the slot, and threw a shot towards the net that deflected off Perugini twice before slipping in behind him for the tying goal with 2:15 remaining on the clock. The teams would head to overtime tied 4-4.

In the opening minute of the extra frame, Coulombe would fly down the left wing and let a shot go that deflected off of Brady Leavold and into the net for the winning goal. Salmon Kings 5 Thunder 4 in OT.

Victoria finished 1/7=14.3% on the power play, while Stockton ended 2/8=25%. The Thunder outshot the Salmon Kings 25-20.

Victoria finished with a record of 38-27-2-5 good for 83points. That is the second best record in the club's history trailing last season's 42-23-4-3 record.

The Salmon Kings will begin the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs on the road in either Alaska or Idaho the weekend of April 10-13. Victoria will then return home to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) of their first round series.
