Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY- The Elmira Jackals finished off the weekend triple header with the Wheeling Nailers with a 4-1 win in front of 3,071 fans tonight at First Arena. Michael Teslak turned away 28 shots in the contest while Brendan Connolly and Paul McIlveen each had two point nights. The Jackals won the season series with the Nailers compiling a 5-4-0 record while moving into a second place tie in the North Division with the Cincinnati Cyclones.
With tonight's two points possibly deciding the outcome of both the Wheeling Nailers and Elmira Jackals seasons the first period opened as planed. Fast paced, back and fourth, with big hits and big saves. The Jackals struck for the only goal of the first period, a Colton Yellow Horn power play tally at the 19:00 mark. Wes Cunningham broke the puck out of his own zone and sent a pass to Brendan Connolly who found the open Yellow Horn in the high slot. Yellow Horn blasted a shot off the goal post and into the net for his 5th tally of the season. The period closed out with Elmira holding a 10-8 shot advantage.
Like the first period, the second didn't feature much scoring thanks to superb goaltending at each end of the ice. Elmira keeper Michael Teslak made the save of the game early in the second when he robbed Tommy Goebel with the glove on a break a way. The Jackals rallied around the performance from Teslak and struck for the only goal of the middle frame which came nine minutes in, Brendan Connolly's 6th of the season. On the power play Paul McIlveen walked out of the far corner and sent a pass to Connolly who put the puck over the downed goaltender, Curtis Darling, to make it 2-0. Elmira held onto the 2-0 lead and a 22-21 shot advantage through two periods of play.
The Nailers would break the Teslak shut out at the 6:25 mark of the third when Tommy Goebel walked in off of the face off and put home a Chris Margott feed. The Jackals would strike back 4:38 later when Steve Yetman carried the puck through the slot and sent a pass to a wide open Paul McIlveen who netted his 20th of the season. The Jackals carried the 3-1 lead into the final moments of the game trying to hold off a six on five attach from Wheeling. The Jackals would put the icing on the cake with a Pierre-Luc Faubert empty netter with five seconds to play in the period. Derek Couture made the play happened when he carried the puck through the neutral zone and dished off the pass to the waiting Faubert.
Elmira's Michael Teslak was named the star of the game as he turned away 28 of 29 shots in the contest to improve to 15-10-1-3 on the season. Curtis Darling took the loss for Wheeling turning away 26 of 29 shots. The Jackals join the Cincinnati Cyclones in the North Divisions second place position.
