Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ - Andrew Sweetland had five points including a hat trick, Oren Eizenman had a goal and two assists, and Marco Cousineau made 41 saves on 43 shots as the Elmira Jackals defeated the Trenton Devils, 7-2, at Sun National Bank Center Saturday night.
The Jackals jumped out to an early shot advantage, collecting the first eight shots on goal and cashing in on their only power play opportunity of the period on a goal by defenseman Eric Regan, his third score of the season. Elmira struck again soon after with a shorthanded goal after Jeff Lerg raced to clear a puck at the blue line, only to have his clearing attempt hit his own defenseman and ricochet to Elmira's Kevin DeVirgilio who cashed his second marker of the season into the vacant net. The Devils cut the Jackals lead in half before the end of the period with Taylor Vichorek poking in a loose puck after Matt Lombardi's initial shot was stopped by Cousineau. It was Vichorek's second goal career goal and second in as many nights.
Their lead cut in half by Trenton, the Jackals came out hard in the second period with Andrew Sweetland restoring Elmira's two-goal lead 27 seconds into the middle frame. The Devils never drew any closer, as Elmira scored three more goals in the second period, including two more by Andrew Sweetland to earn the third-year pro his first hat trick of the season.
With a 6-1 lead in the third period, Elmira made the score 7-1 when Yannick Tifu blasted one home at 9:59. With the score no longer close, the heated division rivals picked up the physical play in the game's final ten minutes, with three separate fights breaking out simultaneously shortly after Elmira had taken a six goal lead. Dave Leaderer scored for Trenton in the game's final minute to make the score 7-2, however it was too little, too late for the Devils as they dropped their second decision of the season to the Jackals.
The Devils have a chance to put Saturday night's loss behind them this week when they travel to Estero, Florida to take on the Everblades in a two-game series starting Tuesday night. Opening faceoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m. Trenton returns home for games Thanksgiving weekend Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. Alaska and Sunday at 4 p.m. vs. Cincinnati.
