Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals had their three-game win streak snapped by the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night as they fell by a 5-1 score at First Arena. The loss moved Elmira's record to 9-7-1 on the season.
Elmira had strong offensive flow in the first period and managed to pump 13 shots on Stingrays' goalie Ryan Zapolski. Jack Downing would have had the best scoring chance of the period after blocking a shot at the point that appeared to have given him a clean breakaway. However, he was hooked up by Art Bidlevski and the Jackals were awarded the power play. It was the only man advantage they received in the first, and despite three shots in the two minutes the Jackals could not convert. Zapolski stopped all 13 he faced to keep the Jackals off of the board, but at the other end of the ice Marc Cheverie was equally as strong and stopped all nine shots he saw from South Carolina.
In the second it was South Carolina's power play that opened the scoring. Working from the right point, Luka Vidmar snapped a wrist shot that found its way through a screen and over Cheverie's left shoulder at 5:57. Just under 10 minutes later Daniel Koger shuffled a rebound past Cheverie and lifted the Stingrays in front by two. It only took 15 seconds for the Jackals to respond, though, as Darren Kramer, from the right wing, fed a streaking Kyle Bushee who beat Zapolski for his fourth goal of the season.
Elmira seemed to have momentum in its favor to start the third period as the Jackals began down by one but having 55 seconds of power play time. They did not manage a shot in that time, though, and a Stingarys' power play goal early in the third put the Jackals back down by two. Tyler McNeely cashed in this time from close range at 3:25 with assists going to Kevin Quick and Matt Pistilli. McNeely then helped to set up Koger's second goal of the game roughly three minutes later, and then capped the scoring with his second goal of the night with 22 seconds to play. The Jackals out-shot South Carolina 15-11 in the third, but could not get any more pucks behind Zapolski.
Cheverie absorbed the loss while making 28 saves on the night. The Jackals were 1-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-4 on the power play.
