New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - In a game where Quebec right-hander John Mariotti tossed a gem, Robert Wagner finished a single shy of a cycle and the Jackals lost half of their coaching staff to ejection, the New Jersey Jackals dropped their second straight contest to the first-place Quebec Capitales, 8-3, on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

With the sinkerballer Mariotti on the mound, Quebec second baseman Seth Henry set a Can-Am League record with 10 assists, eclipsing the previous record of nine, as Mariotti set the pace by inducing 15 ground-ball outs over eight innings. Mariotti (2-0) picked up the win, allowing just one late run on five hits over eight innings.

For the second straight night, the Capitales jumped out to an early lead as they plated the game's first eight runs. In the second inning, an RBI triple to right by Robert Wagner opened the scoring before the Capitales extended their lead to 4-0 when Jeff Helps laced a two-run triple to left past a diving Jeremy Slayden and Goefrey Tomlinson dumped an RBI single over a drawn-in infield. Quebec extended its lead to 5-0 on a Wagner RBI double in the third and that score held until the seventh inning.

In the seventh, Wagner struck again when he lifted a deep fly ball to right center following a Tomlinson leadoff double Chris White tracked over, collided with the wall, and the ball popped out of White's glove and rolled towards the batters eye, allowing Wagner to round the bases with an inside-the-park home run to give Quebec a 7-0 advantage.

The Capitales used a Tomlinson double and an RBI single off the bat of Sebastien Boucher in the eighth inning to make it an 8-0 contest.

New Jersey finally broke through against Mariotti in the eighth inning when Nick Giarraputo laced a one-out triple and scored two batters later when Jordan Newton, who came off the bench when White left with an injury in the seventh inning, sliced an RBI double to right center to make it 8-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jackals' catcher Myron Leslie launched his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right following a Leonard Davis leadoff walk to cap the scoring.

New Jersey starter Shaun Ellis (3-1) dropped his first decision since being traded to New Jersey on June 6, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings.

The Jackals and Capitales conclude their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (6-0, 2.15 ERA) to the mound against Quebec right-hander Matthew Rusch (3-2, 2.66 ERA). Pavlik leads the Can-Am League with six wins while both Pavlik and Rusch rank among the top five ERA leaders in the circuit. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
