Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - June 30, 2011) - After being outscored 24-0 in the first two games of a four game series, the New York Federals (6-27) took their first lead in three games against the Brockton Rox (17-15) on a sacrifice fly by Alex Sumner in the eighth inning and held on to claim a 2-1 victory on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium.
For the second straight night, the traveling Federals got solid pitching out of their starting rotation. Will Hassett (2-3) hurled a season high seven innings while allowing just one unearned run on five hits.
The Rox managed only one run against New York and it came on an RBI groundout from Chris Grossman that plated Jorge Jimenez in the second frame.
Julian Sampson pitched well in the no decision for Brockton, giving up just one run on a game-tying solo homer by Jacob Fabry (2) in the fifth inning. The 22 year old righty scattered three hits over six and 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking two.
Hassett held the Rox bats at bay through the middle innings, before Brocktonloaded the bases in the seventh inning, but failed to scratch a run.
With the game tied 1-1 after seven, New York took their first lead of the series after manufacturing a run in the eighth against Brad Hertzler and Jake Hale. Hertzler gave up a leadoff single to Kyle Obal, before a balk moved the Federals leftfielder to second. A deep fly moved Obal to third, before Sumner's sacrifice fly off of Hale drove in the winning run.
Jon Shepard entered out of the bullpen to pitch a perfect bottom of the eighth and was followed by Kent Worthington, who barely escaped the ninth without damage to earn his third save.
Trey Hernandez was the only Rox batter with two hits in the contest, one of which came as a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth. After a deep fly to leftfield by Grossman moved pinch runner Ryan Royster to third with only one out, the Rox seemed poised to tie the game at two, but fell short as Shawn Williams struck out looking and Dominic Ramos flew out to rightfield, putting game three in the books.
The series and homestand conclude Friday night as the Rox send Robert Bono(2-0, 2.59) to the bump for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. He will be opposed by fellow righthander Michael Streaman (0-2, 6.30), with a post game fireworks spectacular to follow the series finale. Tickets to the game will be half-price for all residents of area towns whose municipal governments are not holding fireworks displays this season.
