Jackals' Perfect Shootout Run Ends in 4-3 Loss to Stingrays

North Charleston, S.C. - After winning their first eight shootouts of 2011-2012, the Elmira Jackals fell in their ninth attempt of the season on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 4-3 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Elmira extended its power-play scoring streak to six games when Mario Larocque fired a puck off the right post and into the net at 3:10 of the opening period with the squad on a five-on-three, giving the Jackals a 1-0 edge.

Former Stingray Jordan Pietrus, who skated his rookie season of 2010-2011 with South Carolina, returned to the North Charleston Coliseum for the first time and drove a puck in from the right circle at 2:16 of the second period, extending Elmira's lead to 2-0.

South Carolina bounced back with a pair of tallies in the second to tie the game. Pierre-Luc O'Brien chipped in a centering feed from Maxime Lacroix at 3:04, while Matt Scherer tipped in a Matt Pope shot for a Stingray power-play tally at 12:04, evening the score 2-2.

Lacroix wristed in a shot at 3:10 of the third period, putting the Stingrays in front for the first time, 3-2.

Elmira, which outshot South Carolina 10-2 in the final stanza, pushed the game into overtime when Kyle Reeds put home a rebound off a Jimmy Martin shot from the right circle, knotting the score 3-3.

After a scoreless overtime period, the Jackals and the Stingrays met in a shootout for the first time in 2011-2012. Mike Radja recorded his league-leading eighth shootout goal of the season, but was the only Jackal to convert. Lacroix, Pope, and O'Brien all notched shootout markers, as South Carolina garnered a 3-1 shootout decision and a 4-3 win.

In net for Elmira, Timo Pielmeier stopped 26 shots and dropped the decision in his 2011-2012 shootout debut. He is 9-7-1-1 on the campaign. Stingray netminder Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves and upped his record to 17-8-1-1 on the season.
