The teams played an entertaining opening period, and Stockton netminder Olivier Roy stole the spotlight. Alaska outshot Stockton 14-12, and had several point blank chances, but Roy kept them scoreless. Stockton struck for the first goal of the game at 7:59 when Kevin Baker took a pass from chris D'Alvise at the bottom of the left circle and caromed a shot off of the skates of Adam Courchaine and into the net. The goal stood as the only one of the period, and the Thunder took a 1-0 lead into the middle frame. Late in the first period Alaska's Benn Olson fought Stockton's Garet Hunt after Olson checked Hunt just inside the Alaska blue line.
Early in the second Stockton made it 2-0 when Milan Kytnar capped a two-on-one at 1:08. Alaska cut Stockton's lead in half on a Tyler Ruegsegger goal at 4:09, but Stockton reclaimed a two-goal advantage at 11:28 on Chris Doyle's tally. Both clubs had 13 shots in the fast-paced period.
Neither team improved on the scoreboard for the majority of the third period. Late in the frame, Alaska received a power play and pulled Courchaine, but Nathan Deck scored from the neutral zone at 18:32 to cap the scoring.
Adam Courchaine (14-4-3) suffered the loss, making 35 saves on 38 shots, while Olivier Roy (9-13-4) earned the win, stopping 29 of 30 shots against. The Aces power play went 0-4, while the Thunder went 0-2. Alaska was outshot by Stockton 39-30 in the game.
The Aces finish their weekend series with Stockton on Sunday afternoon. They return to the Sullivan Arena on February 17. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
