Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals, behind the first career hat trick from Tyler Donati, cruised to a 7-2 win over the Johnstown Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. The win increased the Jackals' East Division lead to 11 points over the Reading Royals.
After Yannick Tifu scored a goal at 2:37 of the first period, Tyler Donati extended his ECHL-leading goal-scoring streak to nine games with a tally at 4:09 to give the Jackals the 2-0 lead. The goal also extended his league-leading scoring streak to 14 games. Justin Donati, who had an assist on the goal, extended his scoring streak to 13 games on the play.
Tyler Donati then gave the Jackals a power-play goal at 15:11 of the first period to make it 3-0, sending in a rebound off a Mat Robinson shot.
In the second period, Justin Donati scored a goal of his own at 5:37 for his 31st of 2009-2010. On that play, Tyler Donati set a new Jackals record (in ECHL play) for points in a season with 84, breaking Benoit Doucet's previous record of 83, set in 2007-2008. The Jackals' all-time scoring record is 93 points, accomplished by Randy Murphy in 2002-2003.
Chris Korchinski converted on the power play at 13:51, sending in a rebound off a Guillaume Lepine shot, to give the Jackals a 5-0 advantage.
A Sean Berkstresser shot off a turnover 30 seconds into the third period gave the Chiefs some momentum, but Tyler Donati recorded his hat trick with a goal at 6:23, beating Chiefs goaltender John Murray high glove side, to make it 6-1.
Jim McKenzie scored the Chiefs' second unassisted goal of the game at 16:21, but Maxime Gratchev's wrist shot from the left circle at 19:33 gave the Jackals a 7-2 lead and closed out the scoring.
Julien Ellis made 25 saves on 27 shots to improve to 12-4-1-0 with the Jackals, while Murray stopped 18 of 25 shots for the Chiefs, falling to 4-18-2-0 on the season.
The Jackals record improved to 30-18-3-2 with the victory, while the Chiefs' record dropped to 14-32-5-3 in 2009-2010.
The Jackals host the Trenton Devils on Friday night and the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night, with both games beginning at 7:35 p.m. To order tickets, visit the First Arena Box Office, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), or log onto Ticketmaster.com.
