Chiefs toppled by Devils

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs fell to the Trenton Devils by a score of 6-2 Saturday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial

The Devils came surging out of the gates sent a flurry of shots John Murray's way. Chris Poli took advantage of a 5 on 3 power play to score his fifth goal of the season at 4:26 in the first and put the Devils up 1-0. Tony Zancanaro and Dan Charleston were credited with the assists. The Chiefs roared back and out-shot the Devils 10-3 over the next few minutes but couldn't find a way to push one past Dave Caruso.

The second period was the Chiefs chance to really pepper the net with shots. Early on at 2:56 Jim McKenzie was able to fire back his own rebound for his eleventh on the season. Sean Berkstresser and Trevor Hendrikx registered the assists on the power play goal. The Devils fought back and regained the lead at 13:35 in the period on another 5-on-3 power play goal. Tim Kunes scored his fourth of the season with Matt Vokes and Charleston gaining the assists. The Chiefs were able to out shoot the devils 21 to 10 in the period but left trailing.

In the third the Chiefs earned a power play 18 seconds into the frame but failed to capitalize and tie the game. The Devils then bolstered their lead with back to back power play goals early on. McKenzie took consecutive minors for hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct at 2:35. Poli scored his second goal of the game at 3:08 with Vokes and Kunes registering the assists. Soon after at 3:42 Ryan Ginand scored his twelfth of the season with Dave Leaderer and Jack Combs gaining the assists. The Devils kept the assault going, scoring while skating 4 on 4 at 4:28 to go up 5-1. Poli scored the hat trick goal with Charleston and Slavomir Tomko registering the assists. The Devils continued to build on their lead; going up 6-1 on a Brett Wilson goal at 16:51 in the period. Vokes and Combs had the assists. The Chiefs were able to keep their heads up and earn a goal back. Connor Shields was able to tip in a blistering shot from Michael Couch for his twenty third goal of the season at 17:38 for the final goal of the game

Murray made 38 saves in the loss. The Chiefs went 1-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-9 on the penalty kill.
