Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
West Valley City, UT - In a Saturday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies met in the finale of a three-game set at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah. Victoria gave Leland Irving the nod in net, while Utah countered with Mitch O'Keefe.
Neither team could light the lamp in the opening frame as both goaltenders kept the opposition at bay. Irving turned aside 13 shots, while O'Keefe countered with 10 saves. Both clubs headed to the first intermission in a scoreless tie.
The lone tally of the middle period came off the stick of Salmon Kings' forward Matt Siddall at the 8:23 mark. On a two-man advantage Victoria captain Wes Goldie fired a shot from that slot that hit O'Keefe in the chest and fell to the right side to an open Siddall who slid the puck past the Grizzlies' netminder into the net for his 17th marker of the season. The Salmon Kings took their one goal advantage into the third period.
Tony Romano knotted the game at 1-1 with his seventh goal of the season at 7:08 of the final period. Romano took a pass from Steve McJannet into the right faceoff circle and fired a shot past the blocker of Irving into the top corner of the net. The Grizzlies took the lead at 11:35 on the power play when James Sixsmith buried a rebound past Irving to register his 14th marker of the campaign. Victoria pulled Irving for an extra attacker in the final minute but had their attempts end up fruitless as Lance Galbraith banked an empty-net goal to secure the victory for the home side. Grizzlies 3 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria went 1/8=12.5% on the power play while Utah was 2/6=33.3%. The Grizzlies outshot the Salmon Kings 38-27.
The Salmon Kings now head to Bakersfield for a two-game set next weekend with matches on Friday, February 26th, and Saturday, February 27th with both. Puck drop for both contests versus the Condors is at 7:00 p.m. Victoria returns home to host the National Conference leading Idaho Steelheads for a three-game set with matches on Wednesday, March 10th, Friday, March 12th, and Saturday, March 13th. Puck drop for all three games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre is 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
