Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Nick Mazzolini (pictured, courtesy Greg Martin) assisted on a pair of goals as Alaska scored twice in a span of 1:12 to snap a 1-1 tie and emerge with a 3-1 victory over Las Vegas before 4,515 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces remain unbeaten in their last eight games (7-0-1) on home ice dating to January 9 and climb three games above.500 for the first time in three months (26-23-5) heading into a pivotal three-game series at West Division leader Idaho, beginning Wednesday at 5:10 p.m. AT and continuing Friday and Saturday at 5:10 p.m. AT. All three games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM. Alaska last faced the Steelheads back in December, losing three of four games played in Boise.

Mick Lawrence scored off the rush to give the Wranglers a 1-0 lead Sunday at 10:50 of the opening frame, but the visitors failed to solve Aces goalie Scott Reid from that point on, and for the third straight game, were out-shot in every period. Alaska tied the contest on a Nick Tuzzolino power play goal 71 seconds into the second period, its fifth goal with the man advantage in this series, which featured each team winning 4-3 in overtime in the first two games.

Back-to-back turnovers by Las Vegas in its own end led to the eventual game-winner, a wrist shot by Bryan Miller that sailed past a screened Jimmy Spratt at 5:23 of the third period. 72 seconds later, Judd Blackwater collected his third goal of the series (and 23rd of the season) by punching home a rebound of a Mazzolini shot. The Wranglers never seriously threatened, as Reid finished with 27 saves while his teammates piled up a season-high 41 shots on goal. The Aces have out-shot their opponent in four consecutive games for the first time all season and are 14-42 on the power play (33%) over their last nine tilts.
