Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV--The Nailers were unable to hold an early 3-0 lead as they took a frustrating 4-3 loss to the Elmira Jackals Friday night at WesBanco arena. Aaron Clarke, Thomas Beauregard, and Jordan Fox led the way for the Nailers in a three goal first period.

Former Nailers and Penguins goalie Andy Chiodo made his first appearance in Wheeling in over four years and picked up the win after replacing starting goalie Julian Ellis in the 2nd period. Chiodo made 21 saves on 21 shots to hold his former team at bay. Justin Donati scored a hat trick in the comeback effort and his twin brother Tyler Donati tacked on the game-winning goal later in the 3rd.

The Nailers came away with an early 3-0 lead after one period of play and were looking great to start. Aaron Clarke picked up the rebound on the short handed drive of Andrew Lord and fired it in to give the Nailers a 1-0 at 3:40. It was Clarke's 14th of the season and he leads the league with 4 shorthanded goals.

Later in the 1st period, Thomas Beauregard beat two Jackals defenders and backhanded it home, 2-0 at 15:53. Thomas set his own personal high with 32 goals and is tied for 2nd in the league with Ryan Kinasewich of Utah.

Nine seconds later Kevin Schmidt found Jordan Fox down ice who shot a hard wrister over the shoulder of Andy Chiodo for his 15th of the year that stretched the Nailers lead to 3-0 at the end of the first. It was the quickest back to back goals this season for the Nailers.

A frustrated Elmira team gave their goalie Julien Ellis the boot and Andy Chiodo entered for the Jackals at the beginning of the 2nd period. Ellis gave up 3 goals in the first, one being a shorthanded goal.

Elmira won the draw, raced up the ice and Justin Donati shot it past Adam Berkhoel at 5:27 in the 2nd that cut the Nailers lead to 3-1.

The Donati brothers teamed up and brought the Jackals within a goal early in the 3rd. Tyler Donati passed cross ice to his brother, Justin Donati who snuck it past Berkhoel on a partial breakaway for his 2nd of the evening at 2:42.

The Donati brothers made a 2 goal comeback in the 3rd period to take the lead 3-4.

On the giveaway, Justin Donati got it past Berkhoel for the hat trick from Tyler Donati to tie it up for the Jackals 3-3 with 11:00 left in the 3rd period.

Minutes later the Jackals took a 3-4 lead and Tyler Donati slammed in a one timer from the left wing. Both Tyler and Justin Donati had a 4 point night and are tied for the ECHL lead with 73 points apiece.

The Nailers fall to 26-21-4 and remain in 6th place in the Conference with 56 points. The Nailers are 4-4-0 against the Elmira Jackals on the regular season. The two teams will have a rematch Saturday night at WesBanco Arena.

Saturday the Nailers host the Elmira Jackals again for Boy Scout Night and also Mini-Stick Night for the first 1,000 kids courtesy of Tim Horton's. Wheeling wraps up their 3-in-3 stretch on Valentine's Day with a Sunday evening 5:00pm game at the Reading Royals.

Following this Saturday's game, the Nailers will not be back at WesBanco for three weeks as they will embark on a seven game road trip to carry them into the month of March.
