Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - The Walleye returned home for a huge game against rival Cincinnati on Friday night. Entering the contest, Toledo held the seventh seed in the playoff race and needed a big win on the home ice against the division-leading Cyclones. Working to their advantage, however, is a 5-2 record against the Cyclones this year.

The first period was a well-played and exciting start, with each team holding the other scoreless. The Cyclones had two power play opportunities, but the Walleye stopped each chance. Other than special teams, each team was equal by the end of the period, being square at ten shots apiece.

Cincinnati, however, was the first to strike in the contest. Early in the second, at 2:55, Toledo had just killed a Chris Robertson penalty when the visitors scored. After a shot was moved aside by Alec Richards, Cincinnati retained possession with Scott Marchesi collecting the rebound. The Walleye defense was a step behind and Marchesi fed a backhanded pass in front to Barrett Ehgoetz, who tapped it over Richards for the 1-0 lead taken to the second intermission.

Despite quality chances for the Walleye throughout the game, even in to the third period, the lone Cincinnati goal stood out as the winner. Toledo had four power plays in the third, including a 5-on-3 advantage, but could not put one away. Instead, Robert Mayer was outstanding as he stopped all 26 shots for the shutout.
