Jackals bring in new coach

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today the signing of former Philadelphia Flyer Dave Schultz to take over as the team's Head Coach effective immediately.

Schultz comes to the Jackals as one of the most well-known members of the Philadelphia Flyers of the 1970's. He played nine seasons in the National Hockey League, leaving his mark as one of the most feared enforcers in the history of the sport. Nicknamed "The Hammer," he personified the gritty, physical, hard working Flyers team and is credited as the reason they were coined the "Broad Street Bullies."

"We are very excited to welcome Dave to the organization," said team President Tamer Afr. "The decision to add him to our club came from our desire to give back to the fans. They deserve our best efforts and that's what they are getting."

Schultz is no stranger to the United Hockey League, in 1996-97 he was behind the bench as the Head Coach of the Madison Monsters, earning an impressive 46-21-7 record. The next year he moved to Louisiana as the coach for the Baton Rouge Kingfish of the ECHL. In 1998-99 he returned the UHL as the front man for the Mohawk Valley Prowlers. Schultz was also the general manager and coach of an Atlantic Coast Hockey League team in 1985-86, the New York Slapshots of Staten Island.

"I am excited to be back in the game," said new Jackals Head Coach Dave Schultz. "I'm here to see what I can do to try to right the ship and we're going to see if we can win our next game, then go from there."

A native of Waldheim, Saskatchewan, he appeared in 535 NHL games, racking up 200 points (79 goals, 121 points) and 2,294 penalty minutes. Schultz won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships with Philadelphia in 1974 and 1975; his career playoff totaled 73 games played, 20 points and 412 minutes in penalties. His best season offensive season came in 1973-74 when he tallied 20 goals and 16 assists (36 points) and 348 PIMs. Schultz set an NHL single season record of 472 penalty minutes in 1974-75, a record that still stands today. He also played with the Los Angeles Kings, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres before retiring in 1980. The Hammer was the Flyers 5th round draft pick (50th overall) in the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft.

Schultz, who arrived in Elmira on Monday, will run his first practice Monday afternoon and will be behind the bench for the team's trip to Glens Falls, NY on Wednesday to face off with Adirondack.

"Todd has been an incredible asset in the five years he has been here," said Afr. "We acknowledge how much he has contributed to the organization and we are happy to keep him within the team."

Todd Brost, who has been Elmira's Head Coach since the team's inception in 2000, will stay on with the organization as the Jackals General Manager/Director of Hockey Operations.

The Jackals are back in action Wednesday, March 2nd as they head to Glens Falls for a match up with the Adirondack Frostbite, a 7:05 pm face-off at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Elmira's next home game is on Friday, March 4th against the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 pm at the First Arena.
