Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals went 0-2 on the weekend, with losses to Fort Wayne Friday and Port Huron Saturday. The Komets defeated the Jackals 2-1 as Thomas Clayton provided the only goal for the Jackals, and Saturday night the red-hot Beacons shut the Jackals down offensively for a 5-0 shutout victory.
Friday night saw one goal scored in each period, with Fort Wayne grabbing the 1-0 lead on a goal by Ryan Severson at the 8:01 mark. Severson drove towards the Jackal net and put home his own rebound for the goal, with Adam Lewis and Kelly Perrault assisting. In the second period, the Komets opened up a 2-0 lead on Michel Massie's goal on the power play at 14:14, with help from Dustin Virag and Marc Barlow.
Elmira made the game close in the third period when Thomas Clayton scored on a deflection in front of the Fort Wayne net, with help from Rob Frost and Corey Neilson. With time running out the Jackals had a game-tying goal disallowed after it was judged to be redirected in off the skate of Eddy Lowe intentionally, allowing Fort Wayne to hold on for the win. Komet rookie goaltender Scott Rideout earned the win in his first professional start, stopping 32 of 33 shots.
Saturday night the Port Huron Beacons came to town, trying to protect their perfect record to start the season. The game started off with a scoreless first 20 minutes, and looked to be an even game with several scoring opportunities at both ends. Elmira fired nine shots on net while Port Huron took eight. But in the second period, the Beacons took control of things, scoring four times. R.I.T. graduate Peter Bournazakis scored twice while Jason Firth potted a goal and two assists in the middle frame, with Casey Harris adding the single tally in the period. The third saw Firth score again to cap a four point night and put the period on a 5-0 win for the Beacons. Both of Firth's goals were special teams markers (one PP, one SH). Chris MacKenzie, who played for Jackals Head Coach Todd Brost in El Paso and collected two WPHL titles, had a pair of assists.
The Jackals will now take on Adirondack twice this week, at home on Thursday at 7 pm, and on the road Friday at 7:30 pm. Thursday's game was originally scheduled for Saturday, and tickets issued for Saturday's game are still good for Thursday's contest. Sunday, the Jackals will travel to Port Huron to take on the Beacons at 5:05 pm. All games can be heard live on WiNGZ 104.9 with Tom Callahan. Pre-game show kicks off one-half hour before faceoff.
JACKAL BITES:
- Kevin Kerr has returned to the Jackals lineup after sitting out the first three regular season games. Kerr was serving a carryover suspension from the East Coast League last year.
- The Jackals will play five of their next eight games on the road after opening with four straight at home. The Jackals are now the only team to have not played a road game yet.
- The Jackals have allowed just 13 goals in four games, fourth best in the league behind Missouri, Port Huron, and Fort Wayne.
- Friday night's game featured 146 PIMs, the most between two teams so far this season in the UHL. Brad Wingfield picked up 40 PIMs in the game.
- The Jackals have already seen two teams (Missouri, Fort Wayne) that they didn't play at home all of last season. Remaining to make an appearance are Quad City January 4th, and Rockford on December 21st.
PLAYER AND GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK NOMINATIONS:
GOTW - Jeremy Symington. Symington played well despite going 0-2 this week, stopping 54 of 60 shots against in 100 minutes of action for a 3.61 GAA and a .900 save percentage. Symington helped Jackal penalty killers limit opposition special teams to only two power play goals on the weekend in twelve attempts.
POTW - Thomas Clayton. Clayton score the only goal for the club this weekend against Fort Wayne on Friday night and went +1 for the game. Clayton finished the week with four shots and 34 PIMs, picking up 17 in each game for the Jackals.
