October 22, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
BOISE, Idaho -- The San Diego Gulls look to run their perfect record to 4-0 tonight when they face off against the Idaho Steelheads at the Bank of America Centre.
This is the first meeting of the year between the two West Coast Hockey League heavyweights. Last season the Gulls were 4-3-1 against the Steelheads and they own the all-time series match-up with a 24-15-2 record. Idaho has had its way with the Blue and Orange in Boise, winning six out of the last seven contents at the B of A Centre.
R.J. Enga, last week's WCHL Player of the Week, holds the early league lead with seven points and four goals. He has scored in all three games this season. Enga has now crept to seventh all-time on the WCHL scoring list with 394 points. He's now eighth all-time with 169 goals... Dean Tiltgen is second in the WCHL with six points... Former NHLer Mark Pederson has scored the game-winning goal in all three Gulls games... Meanwhile, Trevor Koenig is coming off a 48 save performance against the Bakersfield Condors. He comes into tonight's game with 1.67 goals against average and .955 save percentage...
After jumping out of the gate with two straight wins, Idaho is winless in its last two, both coming at the hands of the defending league champion Fresno Falcons. The Steelheads lost in a shootout Friday night after carrying a 1-0 lead into the third period. The Falcons dealt Idaho its first regulation loss the next night, 3-2.
Dan Shermerhorn, Derek Paget and Joe Rybar are tied for the team lead with four points apiece... Rybar is second in the league with four assists, one behind San Diego's Clayton Read... Goaltenders Blair Allison and Jason Cugnet have each played in two games. Allison leads the WCHL with a 1.50 GAA and is third with a .935 save percentage... The Steelheads have the best penalty killing unit in the young season, thwarting 31 of 32 power play chances...
San Diego's road trip continues tomorrow in Idaho, with the game also starting at 6 p.m. (PST). The Blue and Orange will also play in Long Beach Saturday before returning home Sunday against Bakersfield. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts this week on wsradio.ws with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
