
Izzy Wilson Lifts Sea Dogs to Victory

Bridgewater Township, New Jersey - The Portland Sea Dogs beat the Somerset Patriots, 2-1 on Wednesday night at TD Bank Ballpark. The game was tied 1-1 from the third inning to the top of the ninth until Izzy Wilson smashed his first home run of the season to lead off the inning. Portland and Somerset again have the same record at 10-7 and are tied for first place in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League.
LHP Brandon Walter was strong for the Sea Dogs in his fourth outing of the season. He tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. Through his 23.0 innings this season, Walter has not issued a walk and has struck out 29 opposing batters.
In the top of the second inning, Izzy Wilson lined a lead-off single to right field. Christian Koss then hit a groundball to the shortstop, Anthony Volpe, who committed an error throwing to second base and Wilson was safe. Tyler Dearden then singled home Wilson and the Sea Dogs took the 1-0 lead.
The Patriots answered in the bottom of the third inning. Jesus Bastidas hit a lead-off double to right-centerfield then scored two batters later on an RBI single by Volpe and the game was tied, 1-1.
With the game still tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Wilson led off the inning with a solo home run to right-centerfield and the Sea Dogs took the 2-1 lead.
Andrew Politi pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth inning to secure the victory for Portland. He extended his shutout streak to six games and has not allowed a run in 6.2 innings while striking out 12 during that span.
Jacob Wallace (1-0) was awarded the win for the Sea Dogs pitching 1.0 shutout inning allowing one hit while walking one. Steven Jennings (0-1) was given the loss for the Patriots, pitching 2.0 innings allowing the home run by Wilson and striking out five. Politi earned his second save of the year, closing out the ninth inning.
The Sea Dogs and Patriots will meet again tomorrow, Thursday, April 28th at 6:35pm at TD Bank Ballpark. RHP Victor Santos (2-1, 2.12 ERA) will take the mound for Portland while Somerset will send RHP Randy Vasquez (0-0, 2.57 ERA) to the bump.
