Portland Sea Dogs News Release
WINNING STREAK ENDS IN WALK-OFF - Portland fell 2-1 in the bottom of the tenth inning last night to the Somerset Patriots last night. The Sea Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the fourth inning against Mitch Spence. Kole Cottam led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground ball from Tyler Dearden. Cottam moved to third on another grounder, this time from Hudson Potts. With two outs, Izzy Wilson stepped up and drove in Cottam with a double to right, giving Portland their first lead of the game, 1-0. The Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the seventh against Sea Dogs reliever Chase Shugart. Andres Chaparro led off the inning with a solo homer, his third of the season and evened up the score at 1-1. In the bottom half of the tenth inning, the Patriots started with Derek Dietrich as their placed runner on second. Blake Perkins walked and both advanced on a Michael Beltre fly ball. Micky Gasper hit a ground ball to shortstop and the throw home was wide, scoring Dietrich and giving the Patriots a 2-1 walk-off win.
MURPHY CONTINUES STRONG SEASON - Despite the loss last night, LHP Chris Murphy had another fantastic outing for the Sea Dogs. He tossed 6.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits. Murphy retired the nine-straight hitters to end his outing. He now has an ERA of 2.25.
SEA DOGS DROP TO SECOND PLACE - Portland and Somerset were tied for the top spot in the Eastern League before last night's contest. The Patriots now own sole possession of first place while Portland is 1.0 game back in second place.
LET'S LOOK AT THE LEAGUE - David Hamilton continues to lead the Eastern League in stolen bases with 12 and he is also tied for second in RBI (13). Brandon Walter owns the third-best ERA in the league with a 1.06 ERA. Portland reliever Frank German is tied with the most wins (3) in the Eastern League while Brayan Bello is tied for the third most strikeouts with 24. Victor Santos is third in the Eastern league in innings pitched with 17.0.
WELCOME TO DOUBLE-A, TYLER ESPLIN - Prior to tonight's game, the Boston Red Sox have promoted outfielder Tyler Esplin to Portland from High-A Greenville Drive. So far in 2022, he has appeared in eight games for Greenville and was hitting .323 with four doubles and two triples. He spent the entire 2021 season with Greenville and appeared in 78 games, batting .202 with 14 doubles, 1 triple, two home runs and 30 RBI He played 50 games in centerfield, 23 in right field and three as Designated Hitter.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - April 27, 2011: Portland defeated the Binghamton Mets 9-4 in a fog-shortened, 7-inning contest. The fog-out was the first at Hadlock Field since July of '94. Chih-Hsien Chiang drove in three runs.
PITCHING MATCHUP - LHP Brandon Walter takes the mound this evening for the Portland Sea Dogs. He last pitched 4/22 vs Binghamton and tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters. Through his three-starts (17.0 IP), he has not issued a walk and has the third-best ERA in the Eastern League with 1.06.
