Isotopes tame I-Cubs in 9-1 rout
August 18, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Larry Barnes and Joe Dillon hit big home runs and starting pitcher Travis Smith enjoyed one of his finest outings of the season as the Albuquerque Isotopes (66-60) powered their way to a 9-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs (57-65) Thursday night at Isotopes Park. Barnes' three-run long ball keyed a five-run sixth inning and Dillon's two-run shot put the game out of reach as Smith (4-7) allowed just one run through 6.1 dominating innings.
With the win, Albuquerque kept pace with front-running Oklahoma, which blew out Memphis 21-4, for the top position in the American Southern Division. Round Rock defeated Nashville 3-1 to maintain its tie with the âTopes for second place, 1.5 games behind the RedHawks.
Iowa lead-off man Calvin Murray started the game with a triple and crossed the plate on a ground out by Ronny Cedeno to stake the Cubs to a 1-0 lead. Not to be out done, Eric Reed opened the home half with a three-bagger of his own and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Wilson to even the contest. That's the way it stayed until the fifth inning when the âTopes broke through with an unearned run in the fifth inning off Iowa starter Bobby Brownlie (6-5) and knocked the door down in the sixth.
Dillon opened the sixth inning with a walk and went to second base on a base hit by Todd Sears. After a fly out by Jason Wood, Barnes came through the biggest hit of the night, a three-run homer that cleared the wall in left field and gave Albuquerque a 5-1 advantage. But the âTopes weren't done yet as James Shanks followed with a single and came around on a double by Chris Ashby.
Wilson doubled to start the seventh and Dillon cleared the bases with his team-high 23rd homer; his second in as many nights. Wilson added an RBI double in the eighth inning to close out the scoring for the ball game.
The âTopes will conclude their eight-game homestand with the finale of a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs Friday night at 7:05. Right-handed pitcher Ariel Prieto (7-5, 4.39) is scheduled to get the start for Albuquerque against right-handed pitcher Sergio Mitre (4-4, 4.02). The first 2,500 fans through the gate will receive an Isotopes slinky as part of 80's Night at Isotopes Park. Plan to stay after the game and watch a fireworks extravaganza that's sure to impress!
Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
