Headlines: Smith comes up big in RedHawk win; German breaks RedHawk record; Murray makes Triple-A debut
TODAY'S OPPONENT: The Memphis Redbirds are the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. Last year they went 73-71 and finished second in the PCL East.
TODAY'S GAME: The RedHawks continue their series against the Memphis Redbirds. They have won 12 of their last 14, 15 of their last 18 and 21 of their last 28 games. They are 7-11 on Thursdays. Richard Morrison will perform tonight's national anthem.
STANDINGS: The RedHawks are in first place, one and a half games ahead of Albuquerque and Round Rock. Round Rock plays at Nashville at 7 p.m. and Albuquerque hosts Iowa at 8:05.
LAST GAME: A three-RBI double in the sixth inning by Will Smith helped the RedHawks beat Memphis 5-4. Smith's hit gave the RedHawks a 5-3 lead. He went two-for-three with three RBIs last night. Esteban German had three hits. Kelvin Jimenez gave up no runs on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts in his first start this year. He retired the last 10 batters he faced. Jose Veras recorded his 18th save of the year.
VS. MEMPHIS: The RedHawks are 65-61 all-time against Memphis , 36-24 against them at SBC Bricktown Ballpark and 38-24 against them as the home team. Former Redbird Keith McDonald is batting .278 [5-for-18] in five games against them. Jason Botts has four home runs and 15 RBIs in 14 games against the Redbirds.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Oklahoma's A.J. Murray makes his Triple-A debut for the RedHawks tonight. He was 4-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 11 games, 10 starts for Frisco this year. He missed all of 2004 with a torn labrum. Murray was the starting pitcher in Frisco's combined perfect game July 28. He pitched the first six innings and struck out eight. Lefty Chris Narveson starts for Memphis . The RedHawks are 19-20 against lefties this year.
STREAKERS: Outfielder Chris Richard has hits in 24 of his last 26 games. In his last 26 games, he is 37-for-97 [.382] with four home runs and 23 RBIs, raising his average from .251 to .296 ... Outfielder Jason Botts is on a 10-game hitting streak dating back to Aug. 6. He is 13-for-40 [.325] with eight RBIs during the streak, raising his average from .294 to .296 ... Outfielder Will Smith is on an eight-game hitting streak dating back to July 22. He is 13-for-25 [.520] with nine RBIs during the streak, raising his average from .287 to .339 ... The RedHawks have won the last 10 games in which Jose Veras has pitched. He has saves in his last eight appearances.
PENNANT RACE: The three teams vying for the American Conference Southern Division title all have 19 left coming into today. Oklahoma has 10 games at home, nine game on the road and six games against teams with a .500 record or better. Its last eight games are at home and the RedHawks have nine games left against Omaha . Albuquerque has 11 games at home, eight on the road and 17 against teams with a .500 record or better. Its last four games are on the road and the Isotopes play Round Rock eight times. Round Rock has nine games at home, 10 on the road and 19 against teams at .500 or better. Its last eight games are on the road and all 19 games are against either Nashville or Albuquerque .
MILESTONE: Infielder Esteban German stole his 33rd base of the season last night, breaking the RedHawk record for stolen bases in a season. Jeff Pickler had 32 in 2003.
HOME RUNS: The RedHawks have hit 151 home runs this year, tying for the most home runs hit by a RedHawks team in one season. The RedHawks hit 151 in 1999. That team went 83-59 and lost in the PCL Championship Series.
ATTENDANCE: Through 59 home openings, the RedHawks have drawn 466,130 fans, an average of 7,768. Last year, they averaged 6,678 fans. In 1998, they averaged a franchise-record 7,221.
DOT-DOT-DOTS: The RedHawks have used 32 pitchers so far this season. They used 30 all of last season ... Jason Botts' seven triples this year ties the single-season RedHawks record set by Kelly Dransfeldt in 2002 ... Relief pitcher Jose Veras has 18 saves this season, tying both the single season and career record for saves by a RedHawk, held by Allen McDill [1999] and Brad Clontz [2004] ... 1B Adrian Gonzalez has been recalled by Texas ... P Kevin Gryboski has been optioned by Texas.
