August 18, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to beat Memphis 21-4 and stay one and a half games in first place Friday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.
The 12-run fifth was the most runs in one inning in RedHawk history. The 21 runs was the second most ever scored by the RedHawks and their most runs scored at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.
Jason Conti hit a grand slam to cap the scoring in the fifth and give the RedHawks 152 home runs in the 2005 season. That breaks the record for most home runs by a RedHawk team in one year. They hit 151 in 1999.
Conti finished the night three-for-five with six RBIs. Jason Botts also had six, going four-for-six with four runs scored.
The RedHawks had nine hits in the fifth inning and sent 15 batters to the plate.
Starting pitcher A.J. Murray was the winner in his Triple-A debut, going five innings and giving up two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He retired the last seven batters he faced.
Former RedHawk Chad Allen was two-for-two with a double, home run and two RBIs for Memphis. However, Allen left the game in the sixth inning after a foul ball bounced off the dirt near home plate and hit him above his right eye.
The Redbirds used seven pitchers. None of them went more than two innings. Their first pitcher, Chris Narveson, and last pitcher, Josh Pearce, went two innings each. Armando Almanza pitched one third of an inning and faced two batters. He was ejected after hitting Will Smith with a pitch in the sixth inning.
Relief pitcher Kevin Gryboski made his RedHawks debut Thursday. He pitched the sixth inning and struck out all three batters he faced. He was optioned by Texas earlier in the week.
The RedHawks remain one and a half games in first place in the American Conference Southern Division. Round Rock and Albuquerque remain tied for second after both won Thursday.
The RedHawks finish their series with Memphis and their homestand at 7:05 p.m. Friday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.
