April 15, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (5-3) clobbered 21 hits, including a franchise-tying eight doubles, en route to a 13-5 series-ending win over the New Orleans Zephyrs (4-4) Thursday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The meat of the Isotopes order, comprised of John Lindsey, Jay Gibbons and Prentice Redman combined for 12 hits, seven doubles, and six RBI as Albuquerque broke out for 10 runs over its final three offensive innings.
With New Orleans holding a 5-3 lead entering the sixth inning, the 'Topes rattled five straight hits off Taylor Tankersley (1-1) to claim the lead and begin their offensive deluge.
Lindsey opened the frame with a solo home run to center with Gibbons following with a double and Redman with a triple to tie it at 5-5. Russ Mitchell knocked in the go-ahead run with a single to right to plate Redman and Keyter Collado put the 'Topes ahead 7-5 after reaching on a single and moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and fielder's choice.
Albuquerque pushed across two more tallies in the seventh with run-scoring singles from Gibbons and Collado to extend its lead to 9-5. For good measure, the Isotopes added four in the eighth. Ivan DeJesus, Jr. singled to right and Xavier Paul legged out an infield hit to set up Lindsey, who thumped a double to right to plate the two baserunners. Lindsey would also make it home as the relay throw from the outfield by second baseman Danny Richar sailed well off the mark at home plate, allowing Lindsey to score on the two-base error. A sacrifice fly from Mitchell, who finished with three RBI, capped the Isotopes hefty three innings as the 'Topes' lead ballooned to 13-5.
While Albuquerque's offense was teeing off, a trio of 'Topes relievers combined for four hitless innings to zero the Z's after the fifth. Brent Leach (1-0) allowed two walks, but erased one of the free passes by inducing a double play, and fanned two in two innings of work while picking up the win. Justin Miller and Luis Ayala followed with hit-free innings in the eighth and ninth.
The two teams were all knotted up at 3-3 before the Z's touched starter Josh Lindblom for two runs in the fifth. Albuquerque's early offense came via a run-scoring double from Mitchell in the second and a solo shot from Lindsey and RBI double from Redman in the fourth.
Lindblom ran into trouble with two outs in the fifth, however, surrendering a solo home run to Scott Cousins and serving up an RBI triple to Vinny Rottino with to give New Orleans a 5-3 edge. Lindblom limited further damage, however, using his fifth strikeout to fan Ryan Klosterman and keep Albuquerque within striking distance.
Albuquerque will continue its eight-game opening homestand, entertaining the Omaha Royals in a four-game set beginning tomorrow with right-hander John Ely (1-0, 4.76) facing of with O's right-hander Brad Thompson (0-1, 11.12) in a 7:05 contest from The Lab.
The 'Topes opening homestand rolls on with a series with the Omaha Royals, Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Friday is T-shirt night at Isotopes Park with the first 1,500 fans getting a free shirt courtesy of Webster University.
