Isotopes Fall In Extra Innings, 9-7 To Iowa
April 10, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Josh Labandeira used a leadoff double to help spark a four-run Isotopes ninth inning that sent the game into extra frames, but Albuquerque allowed two unanswered runs in the 10th inning and fell 9-7 to the Iowa Cubs Tuesday night at Isotopes Park.
The 'Topes (3-3) trailed 7-3 and were down to their final three outs, but four runs on four hits and three walks forced extra innings. In the extra frame, Scott Moore notched an RBI single and Micah Hoffpauir raced home on a wild pitch to put the I-Cubs (3-3) ahead 9-7. Chris Ashby led off the home half of the 10th with a single, but he'd get no further and the Isotopes dropped their second-straight game.
Labandeira and John Gall each collected three hits on the evening. Labandeira scored once and had two RBI, while Gall scored a run and drove in another.
'Topes starter Chris George did not figure in the decision, but did have one of his best outings in a 'Topes uniform. The left-hander struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings, allowing three runs-two earned-on two hits. With the Isotopes ahead 3-2 in the sixth, Roy Corcoran came on in relief, only to commit a pair of throwing errors in the inning that would help the I-Cubs take a 4-3 lead. Iowa added to its advantage in the eighth off Ross Wolf, who surrendered three more earned runs, pushing the score to 7-3.
It was then, though, that the Isotopes rallied back. The Isotopes sent 10 men to the plate in the 9th, with the fourth, and tying, run coming home when Paul Hoover induced a bases-loaded, two-out walk. Labandeira, who started the inning off with a double, came to the plate with two men out and the winning run 90 feet away, but struck out to end the frame. Nate Field (0-1) allowed two runs in the 10th and took the loss.
Federico Baez (1-0) was the fifth and final I-Cub pitcher to appear, tossing 1.1 innings and recording both a blown save and the win. Iowa starter J.R. Mathes allowed three runs on eight hits over four innings with four strikeouts.
Hoffpauir led Iowa at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs driven in.
Albuquerque and Iowa will hook up again on Wednesday at The Lab. Righty Jeff Fulchino (0-0, 3.86) will take the ball for the 'Topes, while right-hander Randy Wells (1-0, 1.50) toes the slab for the I-Cubs. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
The first 3,000 fans through the turnstiles on Wednesday receive a Drawstring Backpack, courtesy of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, American Cancer Society, NM Department of Health and Cooney Watson & Associates, Inc.
