Zephyrs Will Kick Off Season Friday With Zephyr Field 10th Anniversary Celebration

Metairie, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs will open their home season this Friday, April 13th against the Nashville Sounds at 7:00 PM, and the opener will mark the 10th anniversary of Zephyr Field.

The Zephyrs will honor the anniversary during their games Friday and Saturday (6:00 PM game). On Friday fans will receive a commemorative poster.

The first pitch on Friday will be thrown out by Bob Diviney and Zephyrs owner Don Beaver. Diviney, a former Jefferson Parish Councilman, lead the charge to bring Minor League Baseball, and eventually the Zephyrs, to New Orleans when he formed Jefferson Parish Baseball, Inc. Beaver is the Zephyrs majority owner, based out of Hickory, North Carolina.

After the game, the Zephyrs will debut a six-minute documentary commemorating Zephyr Field and the different events it has hosted in 10 years, followed by a spectacular fireworks show.

On Saturday, April 14th the earliest arriving fans will get a commemorative replica of Zephyr Field at the gates. After the game there will be a post-game concert on the Zatarain's stage with the band Main St.

Opened in 1997, Zephyr Field has been the primary home of the Zephyrs, but has also hosted a variety of different events. Besides hosting the best of college baseball for years, the park hosted Tulane University's entire baseball season in 2006 and 2007. In 2001 the park drew 35,268 fans for the three-game Super Regional between LSU and Tulane. The park has also been the primary host of the Louisiana 5A State High School baseball tournament since 2004.

In addition to baseball, Zephyr Field hosted a presidential rally with George W. Bush in 2001 and has been featured in two motion pictures - Mr. 3000 and Failure to Launch.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the ballpark and surrounding parking lots were used as a staging ground for rescue operations by FEMA and the National Guard.
