July 9, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen starting pitcher David Baker pitched six scoreless innings on Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium as the IronBirds shutout the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-0.

The IronBirds took the early lead in the third inning. With two men down, Glynn Davis grounded a double down the left-field line. Austin Knight knocked him in with an RBI-single to right, making it 1-0.

With one swing of the bat, Joe Velleggia doubled the IronBirds' lead in the fourth inning. The big first baseman led off the frame with his second homer of the season - a tape-measure shot to left-center field - giving Aberdeen a two-run lead.

Two runs ended up being enough. IronBirds starting pitcher Baker exited after the sixth. He allowed no runs on two hits, walked one, and struck out four.

Alex Schmarzo, Enrico Jimenez and Jose Mota pitched the final three innings, completing the two-hit shutout.

Baker (1-2) was credited with the win. Juri Perez (1-2) took the loss. Mota (1) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

These two clubs will meet in game two of this three-game series Sunday evening at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The IronBirds will have left-hander Trent Howard (1-0, 5.06) on the hill. He'll go up against righty Jonas Dufek (1-0, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
