-SPIKES AND MUCKDOGS COME BACK TO STATE COLLEGE: The State College Spikes meet the Batavia Muckdogs tonight to begin a new three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as part of a string of six straight meetings that started on Wednesday. The Spikes will also look to end a six-game slide, three of which are losses in the ninth inning. Batavia leads the all-time series, 31-22, and is 15-11 against the Spikes in State College.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes got an array of great defensive plays and Matt Skirving's eighth double of the year, but the Batavia Muckdogs came from behind to defeat the Spikes, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning for the second time in three nights. State College's first run came in the second inning on a Jorge Bishop fielder's choice to tie the game. The Spikes then took the lead, 2-1 when Taylor Lewis crossed the plate off of a third-strike wild pitch in the third inning. Skirving doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, but Batavia used an error, a wild pitch, a base hit and David Medina's double to center in the ninth to win.

-JEFFERSON GETS SECOND START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Mike Jefferson makes his second start of the year for the Spikes tonight. Jefferson recovered from allowing six runs in 2/3 of an inning in his pro debut to throw 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen over his last three appearances. The 22nd-round pick from Louisiana Tech in this year's draft picked up the first victory of his pro career on July 2 at home against Auburn.

-MUCKDOGS GO WITH CORNELIUS ON THE MOUND: Batavia will send left-hander Jonathan Cornelius to the hill for his sixth appearance and second start of the year tonight. Cornelius started the year in the bullpen, where he earned a win with three shutout innings against Williamsport on June 23. The Florida Tech product then made his first start this past Monday against Mahoning Valley. Cornelius was the Cards' 24th-round pick in 2011.
