State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - Chris Lashmet produced a 3-for-3 night at the plate with a pair of runs batted in, but a seven-run sixth inning spelled doom for the State College Spikes in a 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Lashmet's trio of hits included the first double of his professional career, as well as a run-scoring single in the third inning that plated Justin Bencsko and gave the Spikes (5-18) a 1-0 lead in the third inning. State College starter Mike Jefferson also held the Batavia (13-10) bats at bay in his four innings of work, leaving with the 1-0 lead.
The Muckdogs would bring in a pair of runs in the fifth inning off of reliever Joan Montero (0-1), however, and surge forward with five more runs assessed to Montero in the sixth. Batavia collected a total of five hits and benefited from a Spikes error to bring in seven runs total, with two more unearned runs against Jesus Brito ending the frame.
The Spikes would strike in the ninth inning with an RBI single by Samuel Gonzalez, who has a hit in all seven home games in which he has played, plus a bases-loaded walk by Lashmet to finish out the scoring.
Taylor Lewis reached base three times, all on walks, to extend his on-base streak to 13 games. Bencsko added a pair of hits, a walk, and two stolen bases to the State College offensive cause.
Montero took the loss after going a total of 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one. Jefferson allowed just two hits while striking out three to continue his scoreless streak, now at 6 1/3 innings since his first pro appearance.
Batavia reliever Drew Benes (1-1) picked up the win after throwing three scoreless, one-hit innings to back up starter Jonathan Cornelius. Benes also walked a batter and struck out four.
Garrett Wittels, who had a 56-game hitting streak for Florida International University in 2010, picked up his first pro hit for the Muckdogs with a double in the fifth inning off Montero. Nick Martini had three hits, including a double, for Batavia as well.
Sunday, the Spikes take on the Muckdogs for the fifth consecutive game and the second game of three at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. State College will send right-hander Matt Benedict (1-0) to the mound. Benedict went a season-long 5 2/3 innings last time out in a no-decision against Auburn on Monday. Batavia will send right-hander Jose Almarante (2-0) to start on the hill.
