Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes
July 9, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds begin a three-game series tonight at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium against the Tri-City ValleyCats (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Houston Astros). The IronBirds are looking to avoid their third straight loss after falling last night to the Lowell Spinners 9-4. The IronBirds led the game through seven innings, but Lowell piled on six runs over the final two frames to pull away with the victory. The ValleyCats were rained out yesterday. Aberdeen will have right-hander David Baker on the bump. Baker is currently leading the starting staff in ERA (minimum of 0.8 innings pitched per team game). He'll go up against fellow right-hander Juri Perez.
Rotten Road Record
The IronBirds are still searching for their first road win of the season. The club has lost all eight games it's played away from Ripken Stadium (three in Brooklyn, three in Staten Island, and two in Hudson Valley). Aberdeen has been outscored on the road 58-19.
Cowan Sets New Season-High
Right-handed pitcher Jake Cowan was one of the few bright spots in last night's 9-4 IronBirds' loss. In six innings, Cowan struck out a season-high 10 batters. The previous high this season for an IronBirds pitcher was nine (by Parker Bridwell on June 17th and Aaron Wirsch on June 21st). The 10 strikeouts was also a professional career-high for Cowan.
Stealing Spinners
The Spinners ran wild on the IronBirds in the previous three-game series in Aberdeen. Lowell swiped three bases in each of the games and was not caught once. The Spinners are second in the league with 37 stolen bases. They have been caught just five times.
Where's the Long Ball?
After hitting six home runs in their first nine games, the IronBirds have gone 13 games without hitting a round-tripper. Mychal Givens hit the last IronBirds home run on June 25th. In contrast, Aberdeen pitchers have surrendered 15 homers (most in the league).
Much Needed Rest
Following the series with Tri-City, the IronBirds will have their first off-day of the 2011 season. Aberdeen is scheduled to play 25 straight games to start the season. Givens and Connor Narron have played in every game so far this season.
