
IronBirds Drop Rubber Game in Extra Innings

State College, PA - One night after the Aberdeen IronBirds won in 10 innings at State College, the Spikes got their revenge. In the bottom of the 10th inning Thursday night, Sam Gonzalez hit an RBI-single to give State College a 5-4 win over Aberdeen.
Aberdeen wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Glynn Davis doubled to right field to start off the ball game. Sammie Starr laid down a bunt-single. On the play, the third baseman Dan Gamache over-ran the baseball. Davis scored on the bunt/error all the way from second, making it 1-0. Mychal Givens worked a walk. A batter later, Wynston Sawyer shot a single through the right side, scoring Starr.
The Spikes answered with a run in their half of the first. Wes Freeman led the frame off with a double. He advanced to third on a ground out to the right side. Alex Dickerson knocked him in on a sacrifice fly, making it 2-1.
In the fourth inning, State College tied the game. Alex Dickerson led the inning off with a double. After being sacrificed to third, Chris Lashmet knocked him in on a ground-out to second.
The IronBirds took the lead back in the sixth. Sammie Starr reached on a leadoff double. After being sacrificed to third, he scored on Sawyer's RBI-single, making it 3-2.
Aberdeen starter Trent Howard exited the game with the lead. In five innings he allowed two runs on four hits. Howard walked one and struck out three.
Reliever Matt Taylor entered the game for Aberdeen in the eighth and struggled. Kirk Singer reached on a leadoff walk. Freeman doubled, putting runners at second and third. Dickerson knocked them in with a two-run double, giving State College the lead.
The lead didn't last for long. In the top of the ninth, Connor Narron reached on a one-out single He advanced to second on a ground-out to the mound. Dudley Leonora singled to right. Martin Serrata was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Pitcher Emmanuel De Leon threw a wild pitch with Davis at the plate, allowing Narron to score and tying the game at four.
The Spikes won the game in the 10th. Freeman doubled to left field. He advanced to third on a ground-out to the right side. Reliever Devin Jones intentionally walked Dickerson, putting runners on the corners for Gonzalez. He delivered a base-knock to right-center field to give the Spikes the win.
Vince Payne (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning to get the win. Jones (1-2) took the loss.
The IronBirds return to Ripken Stadium Friday night to open up a three-game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies). The IronBirds will have former first-round pick Matt Hobgood (0-3, 11.02) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Colin Kleven (3-4, 4.10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
