Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
The Aberdeen IronBirds look for a series win tonight at the State College Spikes (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates). After dropping the series opener, the IronBirds defeated the Spikes on Wednesday night 5-1 in 10 innings. With the game tied at one in the 10th inning, Aberdeen sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits. Tyler Wilson started the game for the IronBirds, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings of work. Adam Davis knocked in the go-ahead run with a double to right field in the 10th. Tonight, the IronBirds will have All-Star left-hander Trent Howard on the bump. Howard is looking for his fourth win of the season. He'll go up against right-hander Trent Stevenson.
Arms in August
The IronBirds pitching staff is the main reason why Aberdeen has won six of its last seven games. Over the past seven games, the IronBirds have allowed just 15 runs. The team's ERA in the month of August is 3.56. The team's ERA in July was 5.42.
Fowler Figuring it Out
2011 Baltimore Orioles 34th round pick Zach Fowler has become one of the most consistent arms out of the IronBirds bullpen. The left-hander pitched two perfect innings in last night's win, striking out two batters. In his last three appearances, totaling 5.1 innings of work, Fowler has surrendered no runs on just one hit. He has struck out six batters over that span.
Givens Heats Up at Plate
Shortstop Mychal Givens has multiple hits in each of his past two games. Givens leads the team in multi-hit games (16). Despite not being selected to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, Givens leads the IronBirds in hits, runs, and batting average. He has also stolen 11 bases in 13 attempts.
Erbe Clears Waivers
IronBirds right-handed pitcher Brandon Erbe was designated for assignment by the Orioles last week. The transaction removes Erbe from the O's 40-man roster. Erbe did clear waivers, however, and will remain on the IronBirds roster. Erbe has been pitching for the IronBirds after having off-season labrum surgery.
