
IronBirds Back in Win Column, Beat Muckdogs 10-8

Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds beat the Batavia Muckdogs 10-8 Sunday evening. Austin Knight had a three-RBI triple that broke the game open in the 7th inning, giving the IronBirds the lead for good.
Garrett Wittels got the Muckdogs on the board right away in the top of the first. He reached on a Mychal Givens throwing error and then scored on a David Medina sac fly, making it 1-0 Batavia.
Aberdeen countered in the bottom of the second. Austin Knight walked and after a single and another walk, Sammie Starr hit an infield single plating Knight and knotting the game at 1-1.
Batavia seized the lead again in the top of the third. Danny Steinstra hit a leadoff triple and scored on Cesar Valera RBI groundout.
Aberdeen used four singles to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Dudley Leonora and Kyle Hoppy scored on Starr's 2 RBI single.
Batavia scored an unearned run off of Enrico Jimenez in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 3-3.
Aberdeen went ahead for good in the bottom of the inning. After three consecutive walks, Knight cleared the bases with a three RBI triple to right center field that rolled all the way to the wall. Knight scored a batter later on Leonora's RBI single, making it 7-3 Aberdeen after seven.
Batavia scored another run in the top of the eighth, benefiting from four straight walks.
Aberdeen knocked the ball around in the bottom of the eighth. Joe Velleggia hit a triple to deep center field. He scored when the next batter, Wynston Sawyer, hit an RBI single. Connor Narron followed him with a double, putting runners on second and third. Leonora struck again with a two RBI double, making it 10-4 heading into the ninth.
Batavia closed the gap in the ninth, scoring four runs off of Jose Mota. They were unable to get any closer, however, as Mota picked up his third save of the season.
Jake Cowan went six innings for the IronBirds. He allowed two hits, two runs (one earned), walked three and struck out three. He did not factor into the decision. Jimenez gets credit for the win in relief, as he pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned), walking three and striking out one. He improves to 2-1 on the season.
Javier Avendano took the loss for Batavia, falling to 0-1. He pitched a third of an inning, allowed two hits, four runs (all earned), walking three.
The rubber match of this three game set starts tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Berry (0-1, 16.62) will start for the IronBirds. Jonathan Cornelius (1-0, 2.33) will go for the Muckdogs.
