BURLINGTON, VT - Jamestown scored twice in the second and once more in the third for an early lead as three Jammer pitchers held Vermont to a single run on five hits in a 3-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Lake Monsters Sunday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.
Joshua Adams walked to lead off the second and moved to third on a Jobdaun Morales single to right before scoring the game's first run on a Kentrell DeWitt RBI single to right. Morales then scored as Nathan Woods grounded into a 6-4-3 double play for a 2-0 Jammers lead.
Jamestown added an unearned run in the third as Ryan Goetz reached third base on a fielding error by Vermont centerfielder Aaron Shipman. Pedro Mendoza followed with a line drive RBI single to right for a three-run Jammer lead.
Vermont scored its only run of the game in the sixth as Sean Jamieson led off with a double down the leftfield line, advanced to third on a Chad Oberacker bunt single and scored a Chad Lewis RBI forceout. A Dusty Robinson hit put Lake Monster at first and second with one out, but Jammer pitchers retired the final 11 Vermont batters of the game.
Jamestown starter Jose Urena (3-3) allowed one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings for the win, while relievers Brad Mincy and Miguel Mejia combined on 3 1/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts. Vermont starter Tyler Vail (0-2) was charged with three runs (two earnd) on five hits over 5 2/3 innings for the loss.
Jamieson had three of Vermont's five hits for the second straight game as the Lake Monsters (18-17) have been held to just five hits in both games against the Jammers. Mendoza and Morales both had two of the seven hits for Jamestown (21-16).
The Lake Monsters and Jammers wrap up the three-game series at Centennial on Monday night at 7:05 pm with newcomer Drew Granier scheduled to start for Vermont. In his last two starts for the Arizona League Athletics before joining the Lake Monsters, Granier did not a hit in 10 combined innings with 15 strikeouts.
