Auburn Doubledays News Release
Lowell, MA - Leading 5-0 heading to the sixth inning, it looked like the Auburn Doubledays had everything under control. Manny Rodriguez was rolling on the mound having retired 13 of the last 14 he faced. The Spinners seemed out of sorts on the mound too. Lowell starter Luis Diaz giving up two home runs in his four innings of work and reliever Braden Kapteyn couldn't find the strike zone, walking one in an inning plus.
But the sixth inning was different.
Auburn had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the inning but a pair of lineouts and a strikeout left them scoreless in the frame.
Lowell got the first two guys on base in the bottom of the sixth, turning one of those runners into their first run.
The Doubledays were dispersed of in order in the top of the seventh, and then the Spinners erupted. After finding just three hits in their first six innings, the Spinners got four hits in the seventh, two for extra-bases. An RBI double by Leonel Escobar made it 5-2. JT Garcia followed with a double to left that made it 5-4. After a flyout by Keury De La Cruz, Nick Natoli singled through the right side, tying the game at 5-5.
The 5-0 lead was gone.
Auburn was sent down in order once more by Spinners' reliever Luis Bastardo, and Lowell got the lead-off man on in the bottom-half, setting up the game winning hit. Boss Moanaroa blasted a delivery from Aaron Barrett over the wall in right, giving Lowell their first lead of the game, shocking the Doubledays in 7-5 come from behind fashion.
A one-out double by Matt Skole was all Auburn could muster in the ninth, and the Doubledays saw their three-game winning streak snapped at LeLacheur Park on Saturday night in front of 4,883 Spinners fans.
All wasn't bad for the Doubledays in the loss, though. Justin Miller hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot in the third inning, that gave Auburn the game's first lead. Connor Rowe followed with a leadoff shot in the fourth to straightaway center, his first of the year. Manny Rodriguez was nasty on the mound, pitching five and one-third innings, giving up just one run on three hits. Unfortunately, their efforts weren't enough to push the Doubledays over the top.
Auburn will try and even the series with the Spinners tomorrow when they meet at LeLacheur Park for a 5:05pm first pitch. Fans are invited to listen to the live audio play-by-play starting with the pre-game show at 4:50pm on 89.1 FM in Auburn, NY or around the world at www.auburndoubledays.com.
