Iowa Stars shut out Houston 1-0 in first of two games this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas - The Iowa Stars ended their scoreless drought against the Houston Aeros and shut out the club 1-0 in front of 6,366 fans at Toyota Center. The Aeros (27-21-2-3) will play host to the Stars (25-26-2-2) again on Sunday afternoon for the eighth and final meeting of the regular season.

Stars' goaltender Steve Silverthorn earned his first win in five games played with Iowa this year, stopping all 19 shots faced. Houston's rookie net-minder Anton Khudobin blocked 17 of 18 shots on net in his second start, first loss with the Aeros.
After a scoreless first period the Stars recorded the first goal at 11:23 in the second frame. LW Mark Bomersback tallied the opening goal with LW James Neal assisting on the marker that ended the Stars scoreless streak of 94:10 against the Aeros dating back to January 4. The Stars held on to the 1-0 lead through the rest of the period and fended off four Houston power-play opportunities, including two minutes of 5-on-3, through the first 40 minutes.
The Stars kept the Aeros out of the net in the final frame as Iowa shut out Houston for the first time this season. Each team failed to convert on five power-play opportunities in the game.

Notes:
- The 1-0 regulation loss marks only the second time this season the Aeros lost when allowing only one goal. The first was five days ago in Toronto, a 1-0 regulation loss.
- The lone-goal by the Stars ended a streak of 94:10 that the Aeros had kept Iowa scoreless.
- Sunday these teams will play again to finish off the season-series. The Stars lead 5-2 against Houston, one of the wins in overtime.
- Even with the loss the Aeros move up in the ranks, giving up the second fewest goals in the AHL at 127. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have given up the fewest with 120 allowed goals. The former second place Toronto Marlies slid to third after giving up seven goals tonight for a total of 129 goals-against.
