Iowa Cubs News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (25-17) fell 5-1 to the Indianapolis Indians (21-23) in their series finale on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the series resulted in a 3-3 split for Iowa, their second of the year.
Sunday's game featured a rematch between Iowa's Ben Brown and Indianapolis' Quinn Priester on the mound. Priester earned the win in Tuesday's matchup and did again today.
In the top of the second, Indianapolis loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. They broke open scoring as Chavez Young drew a walk to make it 1-0. Brown was able to get out of the jam allowing just the one run. He would finish the day after 4.0 innings where he struck out six.
On the other side, Priester spun 5.0 scoreless innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two hitters.
The Indians plated their second run of the day on a Canaan Smith double in the bottom of the fifth. Iowa put up their only run in the eighth as Nelson Velazquez scored on a wild pitch from Angel Perdomo.
Indianapolis ran away with the game in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run home run from Malcom Nunez that extended their lead to 5-2. Iowa was retired with a double-play and strikeout in the top of the ninth to make the game final.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Nelson Velázquez went 3-4, his sixth multi-hit game of the year.
Iowa outhit Indianapolis 8-6. Today marked just the third loss for Iowa when outhitting their opponent.
Ben Brown has now suffered back-to-back losses, the first time for the righty since June 18 and June 25 of last season.
