DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (48-85) used a five-run first inning to move past the Oklahoma City Dodgers (70-62) by a score of 8-3 on Tuesday night at Principal Park.
The I-Cubs opened the game by getting their first five batters on with no outs. Chris Coghlan and Kris Bryant got on via a single and a walk, before Mike Freeman drove in Coghlan with a single up the middle. Oklahoma City starting pitcher Logan Bawcom load the bases with another walk to Ryan Court and Jason Vosler cranked a grand slam to right field to give Iowa a 5-0 lead after the first frame.
Bryant gave Iowa its sixth run of the game on a bloop RBI-single to center field in the fourth frame. This was Bryant's first hit during his rehab assignment with Iowa. He is now 1-for-2 with three runs, three walks and an RBI in his last two games.
Luke Farrell had a dominant outing, throwing five scoreless frames, striking out seven batters and only giving up one hit. Farrell was replaced by Cory Mazzoni, who gave up a home run to Alex Verdugo to make the game 6-1 in favor of Iowa after six innings.
Iowa added two more runs as the game progressed into the later innings. Taylor Davis squeaked a line drive down the right field line that scored Mark Zagunis in the seventh and Coghlan also mashed a ball off the right field wall to score Davis.
Oklahoma City tagged Duane Underwood for two runs in the eighth inning. Kyle Garlick and Tyler Pill tallied a couple hits to drive in a pair to the game 8-3. Underwood pitched the ninth without giving up a run to secure the win for Iowa.
Iowa and Oklahoma City will play a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch of game one starting at 4:38. Tomorrow is $1 hot dog day at the park. For more information, visit www.iowacubs.com.
