Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa and El Paso split an early doubleheader, Monday at Principal Park. The I-Cubs (24-38) won Game 1 6-5, before the Chihuahuas (32-33) took Game 2 3-0.
It was a back-and-forth contest in the first game as El Paso logged a three-run first inning, but Iowa was able to recover. The I-Cubs got a run back in the bottom of the first and knotted the game at 3-3 in the second on RBI singles from Jacob Hannemann and Victor Caratini. The two teams continued to trade leads as Caratini punctuated his effort with a two-run shot in the fourth. The contest was tied heading into the sixth, but the I-Cubs took advantage of a Lane Adams leadoff walk, manufacturing the winning run without notching a hit in the inning.
Jen-Ho Tseng was chased after just two outs in the shortest outing of his career. He was tagged for three earned runs and took a no-decision. Alberto Baldonado (2-1) grabbed the win after allowing one run through 2.0 innings. Dillon Maples struck out the side in the seventh to earn his fourth save of the season.
Game 2 took on a different tone as Iowa and El Paso combined for just eight hits, only two belonging to the I-Cubs. The Chihuahuas got two runs in the fourth off Iowa starter Alec Mills on a two-run long ball off the bat of Javy Guerra. El Paso added insurance in the seventh, as Iowa was shutout for the sixth time this season.
Mills (3-5) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits while fanning seven. David Bote and Bijan Rademacher claimed Iowa's only hits of the game.
The I-Cubs head to Reno for a three-game series with the Aces beginning at 9:05 p.m. CT Wednesday, June 13. Follow the action on www.iowacubs.com, AM 940, or MiLB.TV.
