Lakewood, N.J. â The Hagerstown Suns (10-3) scored late and often as they won over the Lakewood BlueClaws (3-10) Tuesday night 5-2 at FirstEnergy Park. Dante Brinkley connected for an eighth inning three-run inside the park homer to help the Suns win.
It was a pitching duel early on as no runs were scored until the sixth when the Suns got on the board. Wilson Batista connected for an RBI base hit to score Jesus Gamero from second and the Suns were up 1-0.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the seventh when Sam Orr lined a triple into the right-field corner scoring Jason Crosland. Kiel Fisher would then follow up with an RBI base-hit and the BlueClaws were in control 2-1.
Lakewood's starter Derek Griffith (L, 1-1), pitching into the eighth ran into trouble allowing back to back base-hits to Aaron Hathaway and Batista. After striking out Carlos Gomez, Griffith was lifted for reliever Jose Correa. Brinkley stepped in and lined a pitch to straight away center over the head of Greg Golson. The ball hit off a sign in left-center field and scooted away from Golson allowing Brinkley to score for an inside the park three-run home-run.
Griffith went 7.1 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking three and walking one. Rafael Cova picked up the win in relief for the Captains allowing two runs on three hits over the course of two innings while striking three and walking two.
Kevin Mannix (S, 1) pitched two scoreless innings to record the save allowing no hits while striking out six and walking one.
Brad Harman was 2-for-2 in the game and Sam Orr finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Batista went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Brinkley finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's and a run scored.
The BlueClaws are back in action today to wrap up their series with arch rival and the first place team in the Northern Division, the Hagerstown Suns, affiliate of the New York Mets. Today the first 2,000 fans through the gates 17 and under receive oversized baseball cards courtesy of the Asbury Park Press. First pitch is at 11:05 A.M. with on-air time at 10:50 A.M. on WADB 1310 AM.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the other great promotions this year, fireworks after every Friday night home game sponsored by Toyota World / Scion World of Lakewood. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against affiliates of the New York Yankees and Mets.
