Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns, together with the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum, are thrilled to announce that Hagerstown's Municipal Stadium will be the site for the first-ever National Egg Toss Championships.
The National Egg Toss Championships will take place on Sunday, May 1st, immediately following the Suns home game versus the Kannapolis Intimidators. The Suns game begins at 1:35pm.
"This is yet another excellent event that puts Hagerstown and Washington County on the map nationally," said Tom Riford, President and CEO of the Convention and Visitors Bureau. "As this annual event grows, we anticipate that thousands of people will travel to Hagerstown and Municipal Stadium to watch the competition or to actually compete."
In addition to the National Egg Toss Championships, the Suns will be hosting a number of agriculture-related events at their May 1st game including:
Pre-game cow milking contests featuring local dignitaries and Suns players
Hog-calling contests between innings
Petting Zoo
"I want Hagerstown and Washington County to be known as the Egg Tossing Capital of the World," said Suns General Manager Kurt Landes. "Egg tossing deserves its place in the world of sport, too. The Suns are thrilled to be hosting these phenomenal world-class athletes. Plus, what a great way to kick off National Egg Month."
For the event's inaugural year, local competitors and egg toss amateurs are being encouraged to participate as well. Suns fans and local egg tossers are encouraged to register with the Suns in advance or simply the day of the event at Municipal Stadium.
Teams of two are necessary to compete in the event that features an initial practice round as well as the official championship round. There is no age limit for participants, nor is there a registration fee - other than attending the Suns home game. Sauder's Eggs, of Lititz, PA, will be providing the eggs for the national event.
The Hagerstown Suns are the single A affiliate of the New York Mets. For more information, or to purchase Suns game tickets or sponsorships, contact the Suns at 301.791.6266 or at info@hagerstownsuns.com. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
The Washington County Rural Heritage Museum is a proud co-host of the event. The museum has helped coordinate the animals; including arranging for the world-class cows being utilized for the milking contest. The museum is located on the Sharpsburg Pike, south of Hagerstown, and is a renowned depository of agricultural-related historical items. In addition to honoring the County's history, the Rural Heritage Museum is dedicated to furthering Washington County's present rural status. Agriculture remains an essential element in the life and economy of Washington County. By celebrating its past, museum organizers hope to contribute to its prosperous future.
Washington County is rich in agricultural heritage. There are more than 770 farms in Washington County, Maryland, according to the Maryland Farm Bureau and the Maryland Department of Planning.
