Inferno sign Stathopoulos

COLUMBIA, SC (October 4, 2005) - The Columbia Inferno announce the signing of center Mike Stathopoulos for the 2005-06 season.

The 5'10", 175 lbs. Scarborough, Ontario native registered 18 goals, 24 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 65 games during his rookie season with the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. He played eight playoff games, scoring 6 points (4g-2a). Stathopoulos played four seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, netting 78 goals, 180 assists in 259 games. He also spent one season with the University of Western Ontario appearing in 28 games and scoring 51 points (20g-31a).

"Mike had a successful first year pro last season after finishing in the OHL. He is a natural center men that sees the ice well and has the ability to be an offensive weapon this season," said Head Coach Ted Dent.

Training camp will open on Monday, October 10th at the Carolina Coliseum. The Inferno will play the Charlotte Checkers on Friday, October 14th at 7:05pm in their first preseason game. On Saturday, they hit the road and play the Checkers for the second time in Charlotte. On Tuesday, October 18th, the Inferno is hosting the Augusta Lynx for a benefit game with all proceeds going to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina victims. This game is free to the public and gates will open at 6:05pm. Donations will be collected at the door.
