San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced Tuesday the acquisition of center Pierre-Luc Sleigher from the Las Vegas Wranglers in exchange for the rights to Sean O'Connor and Brett Draney.

Sleigher (pronounced "SLAY-guhr") spent last season with the Toledo Storm before being dealt to Las Vegas this offseason. In 40 games with Toledo, the 23-year-old centerman notched 33 points (12g, 21a) and 78 penalty minutes in 40 games played. Sleigher began his pro career in 2003-04 with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, accumulating 38 points (15g, 23a) and 157 penalty minutes in 63 games.

Prior to joining Atlantic City, the 5-foot-9-inch, 185-pound native of Montreal spent four years in juniors with Victoriaville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During his tenure in juniors, Sleigher tallied 244 points (102g, 142a) and 1,021 penalty minutes in 276 games. He led Victoriaville with 105 points and 67 assists in 2002-03 and was the team leader with 268 penalty minutes in 2001-02.

Sleigher was also teammates with Guillaume Fournier in Victoriaville during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. The two finished No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on Victoriaville's scoring list in 2002-03.

"We're expecting big things from Sleigher," head coach Martin St. Amour said. "He can skate, score, hit... he's the whole package. He's going to be a great character guy on the team and will be a fan-favorite for sure. Plus, he will be re-united with Guillaume and they had great chemistry together in juniors."

O'Connor, 23, recorded 30 points (20g, 10a) and 142 penalty minutes in 46 games for San Diego last season. His 20 goals ranked second on the club. The 6-foot-3-inch, 203-pound native of Victoria, British Columbia also played 15 games with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks last season, registering one assist and 28 penalty minutes.

Draney, 24, came to the Gulls late last season in a trade with the Idaho Steelheads. In 58 games combined with Idaho and San Diego, the 5-foot-8-inch, 182-pounder from Merritt, British Columbia scored 50 points (18g, 32a) while amassing 56 penalty minutes. Draney also appeared in one game with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies. (Utah is now a member of the ECHL.)

The Gulls open training camp Friday, with practice scheduled at 11:45 a.m. at the Escondido Iceoplex. The regular season starts Friday, Oct. 21 in Alaska and the home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. Season ticket packages are currently on sale.
